Salesforce Gives Slack a 30-Feature AI Makeover — and Puts Microsoft Copilot Directly in Its Crosshairs

Marc Benioff unveiled 30 new AI-powered features for Slack at a San Francisco event, including a dramatically upgraded Slackbot AI agent — a move that reframes Slack not as a messaging app but as an enterprise AI coordination layer competing head-on with Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini for Business.

Salesforce Gives Slack a 30-Feature AI Makeover — and Puts Microsoft Copilot Directly in Its Crosshairs

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff took the stage in San Francisco on March 31, 2026 to announce what he framed as a fundamental reimagining of Slack — not an incremental update, but a structural repositioning of the platform as the primary AI coordination layer for enterprise work. The announcement included 30 new AI-powered features, with a heavily upgraded Slackbot agent at the center of the product's new identity.

Slackbot's 'Serious Glow-Up'

The headline feature is the transformation of Slackbot from a simple notification relay and basic command interface into a fully capable AI agent. The upgraded Slackbot can now search across enterprise data sources, draft documents, summarize threads and channels, and — critically — execute multi-step tasks autonomously. This is the architecture of an agentic work assistant, not a chatbot add-on.

The internal baseline for this capability is revealing: Salesforce previously disclosed that during testing with its own 80,000 employees, a rebuilt Slack AI agent powered by Anthropic's Claude achieved a 96% internal satisfaction rating. That figure, if it translates to external customers at any reasonable fraction of that rate, represents a genuinely competitive product.

The Enterprise AI Platform War

The strategic context for this announcement is the intensifying three-way competition for enterprise AI platform supremacy. Microsoft Copilot has established itself in Office 365 and Teams. Google Gemini for Workspace is embedded in Docs, Sheets, and Meet. Salesforce is now betting that Slack — with its 200,000+ enterprise customers and its position as the default communication layer in many technology organizations — can be the third platform that captures the agentic enterprise AI market.

The differentiation angle is integration depth. Slack sits at the intersection of human communication and process workflows in a way that email clients and document editors do not. An AI agent in Slack can observe and act on the actual coordination layer of enterprise work — pulling context from conversation history, CRM records, project management tools, and code repositories simultaneously. Microsoft Copilot's equivalent capability requires navigating across multiple M365 surfaces.

Salesforce's Broader AI Restructuring

The Slack announcement is not an isolated product update. It is part of a company-wide strategic pivot that Benioff has been orchestrating since 2024. Salesforce has acquired or built AI capabilities in: customer data platforms, Einstein AI, Agentforce (its enterprise agent platform), and now Slack's agentic layer. The architecture Benioff is assembling positions Salesforce as the company that sits between enterprise data and enterprise AI action — with Slack as the front-end interface where employees actually interact with that AI system.

The competitive pressure to execute is real. Slack's user growth has been harder to measure against Microsoft Teams, which has benefited from its bundle position inside Microsoft 365. If the 30-feature AI overhaul meaningfully increases Slack's daily active usage and reduces churn, it will validate Salesforce's $27.7 billion acquisition of the platform. If it doesn't move the needle, the strategic rationale for that acquisition will face renewed scrutiny.

What Comes Next

The 30 features announced on March 31 will roll out over Q2 2026. Early access is being prioritized for Salesforce's enterprise tier customers. Benioff did not disclose pricing changes tied to the AI features, but given that every major enterprise software company is using AI capabilities as justification for price increases, Slack's AI features are likely to be tied to premium tiers within the year.
