GPT-5 represents OpenAI's most deliberate attempt yet to move beyond pattern-matching at scale toward something that more closely resembles deliberate reasoning. The model pairs a fast language head with a slower reasoning module — an architectural split that borrows conceptually from Kahneman's dual-process theory of cognition.

In internal benchmarks released alongside the model, GPT-5 scores 87.4% on the MATH competition dataset, compared to GPT-4o's 72.6%. On complex multi-step coding tasks, the improvement is even more pronounced: the model completes 94% of medium-difficulty LeetCode problems compared to 76% for its predecessor.

The Reasoning Module

OpenAI describes the reasoning module as a "deliberation chain" — a learned process that the model applies when it detects a question requires more than retrieval. The module generates intermediate reasoning steps, verifies consistency across steps, and backtracks when it detects contradictions. This is structurally similar to chain-of-thought prompting, but internalized into the model architecture rather than requiring explicit user prompting.

The practical implication is that GPT-5 behaves more reliably on tasks that require sustained logical coherence — legal analysis, financial modeling, scientific reasoning — without users needing to engineer elaborate prompts to elicit that behavior.
