12,000 AI-Generated Blog Posts in One Git Commit. The Scale of AI Content Spam Is Now Measurable.

A GitHub commit to the blog repository of OneUptime, an infrastructure monitoring company, added 12,000 blog posts in a single push. The commit was spotted by a Hacker News user, shared to the community, and proceeded to generate several hundred comments debating what it means when AI content production reaches industrial scale. The short answer: it means the economics of SEO content farming have changed permanently, and the downstream effects are landing on search engines, readers, and human writers simultaneously.

What 12,000 Posts Looks Like

At a typical human writing pace of one well-researched blog post per day, producing 12,000 posts would take a single writer approximately 33 years. At agency scale — 10 writers, working full-time — it would take about three years and cost several million dollars in labor. The GitHub commit accomplished the equivalent in what was presumably minutes of generation time and hours of pipeline execution, at a cost estimated by commenters at under $1,000 in API credits.

The content itself — technical articles tangentially related to infrastructure monitoring, SRE practices, and DevOps tooling — is the kind of long-tail SEO content that has always been produced primarily to capture search traffic rather than serve readers. What has changed is not the intent but the marginal cost. When the floor price for producing this content drops by three orders of magnitude, the equilibrium quantity explodes.

The Signal-to-Noise Problem

Search engines have spent two decades building ranking systems calibrated to the economics of human-produced content. Those systems reward signals — backlinks, engagement, time-on-page, expertise indicators — that were meaningful proxies for quality when content production cost had a floor. When production cost approaches zero and volume can be arbitrarily scaled, the proxies decouple from quality.

Google has acknowledged the challenge and updated its spam policies repeatedly since GPT-3's public release. The 12,000-post commit is evidence that the policies, whatever their intent, have not yet resolved the equilibrium. For human writers whose economic value rests on the assumption that high-quality long-form content is scarce, the resolution of this equilibrium is not an academic question.
